STAR Services takes great pride in our variety of training and education opportunities. We are passionate about the human services and strive to empower your staff with the same passion and knowledge to improve your services.

We understand that getting staff through required training in a timely manner is important. Classes are offered at various times throughout the month including daytime, evening, and weekend hours. Online training is accessible  24/7.  STAR's training classes meet the requirements of MN Consolidated Standards (245B) and Adult Foster Care (203). In addition, we have developed special interest classes that challenge staff to develop professionally.

Affordable training is available online and at our location or yours.  On-site training is available for single classes and half or full day trainings. Alternative Intervention Techniques (AIT)
 4 hours
This course provides employees with preventative and alternative actions to take with potentially violent situations. AIT provides demonstrations of some sanctioned physical intervention techniques. Additionally, participants will gain knowledge of Rule 40’s definitions for exempted, prohibited, and controlled procedures and also understand Emergency Use of Controlled Procedures (EUCP).

This course meets the 245B training requirement on aversive and deprivation procedures and Rule 40.

Alternative Intervention Techniques (AIT) - ONLINE
 1 hour
This course provides employees with preventative and alternative actions to take when supporting individuals with challenging behaviors.

The objectives of this course are to:
  • Identify the process of escalation and de-escalation and how staff can intervene at each stage
  • Teach proactive behavior techniques to prevent aggressive behavior
  • Develop skills for stress/tension reduction
It is recommended Rule 40 for Direct Support Professionals be taken to complement the AIT course.

Alternative Intervention Techniques has supplemental training to complete learning on the topic. AIT Part 2 will cover de-escalation techniques with practices including restraints.

American Heart Association Heartsaver® Adult CPR AED
2 hours
This American Heart Association CPR AED course provides employees with the ability to recognize and treat breathing and cardiac emergencies, administer first aid, perform CPR, call and work with emergency medical system staff, and avoid blood borne pathogen exposure. This course meets the training requirements for CPR. American Heart Association CPR certification is valid for two years.

Bloodborne Pathogens and Hepatitis B - ONLINE
 30 mins
This course provides necessary information to protect employees’ safety and the safety of those they care for when there is a possibility of exposure to body fluids. This training helps comply with OSHA requirements. Included in this training are various blood borne pathogens, standard precautions to take to prevent blood borne pathogen transmission, OSHA requirements for work sites, medical evaluation and follow up, and confidentiality.


Building Effective Teams 1.5 hours
Having productive teams that work well together is a vital part of any workplace. Through teambuilding activities and discussion, this class will help participants learn the steps to take to build a more cohesive and productive team.

The Community Outside Your Front Door
  2 hours
Happiness, friendship, and a sense of belonging can develop when people are engaged in activities of interest and meaning to them. Providers often get overwhelmed with the rules and regulations that are involved with the service provision. Providing meaningful experiences and opportunities for the individuals we support is an important element of providing quality service. But how do we support people in exploring and finding these activities in their community? Participants in this course will learn about tools and approaches to use to support the people they work with in getting connected to people, places, and activities that matter to them.

This course will discuss common causes of conflict in the workplace as well as how to proactively address issues as they arise. Participants will discuss how to address conflict in a productive manner and how to create a more positive workplace.

This course gives an introduction to the state and federal privacy regulations governing services for people with disabilities. Information includes rights as well as privacy safeguards. A Day in the Life 3.5 hours
This course offers an in-depth look at the daily responsibilities of direct care staff. Participants will learn about the history of developmental disabilities and how it affects their jobs today. Additionally, participants will learn how to complete a Daily Log Note, Health Progress Note, Incident/Accident Report, and an Individual Funds Record.

Designated Coordinator Development Program (DCDP)

The Designated Coordinator Development Program is a three day interactive course designed to help participants gain the knowledge, confidence, and skills necessary to be a successful Designated Coordinator.  At the end of the course, participants will receive a certificate of completion.

STAR Services registered nurses can train your staff on equipment used to sustain life or monitor a medical condition including CPAP machines, blood glucose monitoring, subcutaneous injections, diabetes care, Diastat, Epipen, Foley catheter, G or J tube, Hoyer lifts, nebulizers, oxygen delivery, blood pressure monitoring, etc.

This course provides employees with the information and skills needed to lift properly and prevent back injuries. This course is designed to increase knowledge and experience of the reporting and review process according to MN licensing regulations.

Medication Administration Basics 7 hours
This course provides employees with the skills needed to administer medication properly and safely; document medical cares correctly in order to maintain an adequate, legal health record; and understand different categories and types of medications and their side effects.

This course is taught by STAR Services RNs. Participants complete a written test and demonstration of medication administration. Course meets 245B requirements for medication administration training.

This course provides employees with the skills needed to administer medication properly and safely; document medication administration correctly in order to maintain an adequate, legal health record; and understand different categories and types of medications and their side effects. Taught by a Registered Nurse.

Psychotropic Medication Monitoring 3 hours
Monitoring the use of psychotropic medication for its effectiveness is mandatory under 245B licensing regulations.

This class will focus on:
  • Psychotropic medication classifications, uses, and side effects
  • Assessment, documentation, and tracking side effects through the use of monitoring tools (DISCUS and MOSES)
  • Behavior Support Plan content and development
  • Requirements of the Psychotropic Medication Use Checklist (PMUC)

Psychotropic Medication Side Effect Monitoring with the DISCUS and the MOSES
 4 hours
Learn about the relationship between psychotropic medications and their possible side effects, including Tardive Dyskinesia, a disorder that causes involuntary movements. Participants will practice monitoring and learn how to detect Tardive Dyskinesia and understand the difference between other stereotypic behavior.

Other topics for discussion will include:
  • Medications that cause Tardive Dyskinesia and other abnormal, involuntary movement disorders
  • Health care follow up for abnormal DISCUS scores
  • How to use the MOSES in conjunction with the DISCUS

This course provides an overview of Rule 40 (Minnesota Administrative Rules chapter 9525 parts 9525.2700 to 9525.2810) and an explanation of employees’ responsibilities in supporting people with developmental disabilities. This course meets the 245B training requirement on the explanation of responsibilities governing use of aversive and deprivation procedures.

We’ll discuss common workplace stressors in the social services field, introduce exercises and coping strategies that can be utilized in your daily work, and learn how to celebrate the small successes in each day.

As the supported individuals age, the services provided need to adapt and change to support them. This class will help caregivers learn how they can provide effective services for their aging population. We will discuss the aging process, including common diagnoses such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. Additionally we will discuss end of life changes and what can be expected through out these changes.

Understanding 245C: Department of Human Services Background Studies
 3 hours
Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 245C defines the parameters of who must have a background check (BGS), when they should have it and how often. As a program manager, you may or may not be directly responsible for running the background studies on staff. However, these background studies greatly impact the residential, day training and habilitation services, supported employment services, semi-independent living services, or other licensed DHS services you are responsible for managing. This course is a general overview of the requirements for background studies and will help you better understand how 245C impacts your work as a manager.

Understanding Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders 3 hours
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) occur in approximately one of every 100 births nationally and is one of the leading causes of intellectual disabilities in the United States. This three hour introductory course is designed to help participants learn more about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders as well as the behavioral, physical, and mental characteristics that are commonly associated with the diagnosis.  Additionally, this class will discuss common misconceptions about FASD and provide insight into this diagnosis and its effect on the individual.

Understanding Mental and Chemical Health 3 hours
This introductory course will go over common mental health diagnoses and the challenges that arise as a result of them. Participants will learn proactive ways to support the individuals they are working with. Additionally, some of the unique challenges that can arise with chemical dependency in individuals with a mental health diagnosis and what measures can be taken to address addiction in supported individuals will be discussed.

This course provides a foundational understanding of mental illness and how our responses to the symptoms and behaviors can impact an individual’s quality of life. This course discusses the most frequently diagnosed syndromes: Down Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Additionally, participants will learn how and why these syndromes occur and helpful methods for providing services to individuals with these diagnoses.
